Most haciendas were founded by Spanish settlers who received large donations of land from the Spanish Crown and later by Ecuadorian government.

After years of land reforms laws and selling of parcels to neighboring farmers, Haciendas nowadays are reduced to small areas of land around the historical house. But many of the remaining houses maintain their original architecture, gardens and old world character.
